A beautiful old Moorish design occasional table that I believe was made in the last quarter of the C19th. I am not sure whether this was made in Persia or the middle east or whether it was made in the East End of London. There were numerous small workshops making `art` furniture there and the construction used on this piece was the same here as there. It is four sided, so can be said to be in the Western taste, rather than the multi sided Eastern taste. The top is inlaid with Mother of Pearl centred with an inlaid character. The edge is inlaid with MOP discs. The sides are shaped with arches and are inlaid with panels of mother o` pearl and complex wood banding and stringing lines. The table is veneered with ebony throughout apart from the moulding to the top edge which is ebonised and where some of this finish is rubbing off (see photos). It can be seen from the underside of the top that it has once had a label attached which is long since gone. This is the type of table that was stocked by many of the major art furniture stores in London at the time, stores such as Libertys and Heals. It is in good condition. There are the odd little bits of MOP missing, as can be seen from the photos, they are hardly noticeable, there are the odd little bits of inlay missing at the bottom of the feet, again hardly noticeable. The table is sound and secure, no wobbles or movement, and there is some rubbing to the moulding around the top as previously mentioned. This table is in better than average condition but is used, as should all good antique furniture be. If you are looking for something new and pristine then I would suggest you look elsewhere and pay the price from some big store or other. This is a genuine piece of antique furniture that has the patina of age and the character of use. It measures 17 1/8" across the top and stands 19 3/4" high.
This is one of three similar pieces of that I will be listing today which may appeal to collectors or dealers of the Arts and Crafts or Aesthetic styles.
