Genuine Antique Victorian dinnerware, possibly sold at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. (dating and explanation follows the photos).
*********************************************************************** This has excellent display.
The Mark says: "George Jones and Sons -Royal Porcelaine Opaque England Chicago Pattern Hudson shape 157152" The bottom of the dish has an embossed number for the Hudson shape: appears to be: 143137.
*********************************************************************** This is an oval covered chowder tureen or covered casserole for serving thick soup or hot vegetables. Staffordshire ironstone transferware.
*********************************************************************** It measures 12 inches handle edge to handle edge, and 3-1/4 inches high. The lid is app 10-1/4 inches long and app 6-1/2 inches wide, and it is app 6 inches high with the lid on. Weighs 4 pounds 4 ounces. Ships at 6 pounds, postage to be paid by buyer.
*********************************************************************** The china is white with a flower design in shades of brown, with open flowers, perhaps wild roses, and a finial or knob shaped like two plumes or feathers arching toward each other, like plumes of the Prince of Wales, or in Columbus' hat.
The handles also have plume design.
There is ring of flowers around the interior near the bottom of the bowl.
It would appear that the 'Chicago' pattern was targeted for the up-coming Columbian Exposition, the quadricentennial or 400 year anniversary of the voyage of Columbus, opened on October 12, 1892 and lasted until April of 1893.
The final approval to start construction for the World's Fair was not given until late 1890.
The English China and Porcelain registry numbers for 1890 begin with 141273 and end with 163766. This number is 157152, and places registration for this design at the end of 1890. That would give a year for the process of manufacture, and shipping to the US for opening the fair in 1892. Inclusion of the word 'England' in the mark denotes a date for manufacture 1891 or after, which would be a correct timeframe.
President McKinley introduced the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890 which required that all imports carry the name of the country of manufacture. Marked both on the base and inside the lid. This is a very scarce pattern, and appears to be an item that the George Jones Company was planning to sell at the Fair, if not, it would certainly have been intended for the British market, for those who could not travel across the ocean to the fair.
World's Fair or Expo memorabilia or souvenir. Please see the companion auction for Devil in the White City, a History of the Architecture and creation of The Columbian Exposition, currently on eBay!
********************************************************************** The George Jones company started operation in c.1864 and in 1873 became George Jones & Sons Ltd. Operated the Trent Potteries in Stoke-upon-Trent (renamed "Crescent Potteries" in c.1907) There is a really tiny pin point sized nick or flake in the glaze on the rim and one even smaller near it, you can see it with a magnified close-up.Here are the tiny glaze rubs, or tiny flakes, magnified so that you can see them with a penny for size, not seen when the lid is in place: There is some wear to one handle edge, shown in the clickable photos
