India - Southern Sheet + South-Eastern Provinces of India
This Original Coloured engraved map of Southern India the Malay Peninsula 1861, was drawn and engraved by W AK Johnston, from Keith Johnston's General Atlas, First Edition, published by William Blackwood Sons, Edinburgh London, 1861. Maps from this atlas are amongst the most geographically politically accurate maps from the mid/late-1800's, as well as being very detailed nice looking maps. The map image measures 57cm by 44cm (22.7in by 17.4in) plus 2cm margins, Blank on the Reserve, and printed on thick study paper.
This map shows the Southern India Celyon (today Sri Lanka) plus an inset map, that is titled: South-Eastern Provinces of India (Hindu-Chinese Countries or Further India), and shows what is today Malaysia, Singapore, Burma and Thailand, and north Sumatra (Inset measures 38cm x 13cm). A number of coastal sandbanks are shown, plus the Laccadive Islands, the Andaman Nicobar Islands. The map shows Southern India (from 21 Degrees south) divided up into the states of the time - each with clear borders named capital cities - and with different coloured borders representing who controlled them, either the British Territory (red), states under British protection (yellow), and independant states (green) and the smaller Portuguese (blule) French possesions (purple). The inset map shows eastern India/Burma and the Malay Peninsula - includes the states of Bhutan, Indepedant Tipperah, Unsettled Hill Tribes, Burma and its tributary states, Siam and its tributary states (today Thailand), and the British states colonies of Malacca, Singapore and Wellesley/George Town. It's interesting to see that the large majority of Malay is the independant state of Siam (Thailand), with 3 very small British settlements - in future years all of Malay will be taken over by the British. Includes notes over the map relating to various geographical political features. Feel free to ask for any extra photo's or if you have any questions!
The map has a very detailed representation of the geography, including the rivers, lakes, swamps, mountains, coastlines, islands, and ANY other feauture you can think of, as well as the major towns/cities, railways canals, dates of major battles and 5 measurement scales - Indian Kos, Indian Leagues, Karnatak Leagues, Italian Miles and English Miles. Colour is used very well, in allowing you to better read the map, especially with the use of blue for all water. Johnston maps where amongst the most geographically detailed and accurate maps of the mid to late 1800's and we will be amazed by the amount of information fitted in, and the expert use of colour.
