1853 (60) USPRR Print (Stevens) Lightning Lake, Minnesota This 6 by 9.5 inch tinted lithograph print is taken from Volume XII, Book I of the "Reports of Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean...". It is House of Representatives Ex Doc #56, 36th congress, Ist session and was printed in Washington by Thomas Ford. This is the Narrative by Isaac Stevens of the Exploration along the 47th and 49 Parallels of North latitude from Saint Paul to Puget Sound. Steven was the Governor of Washington Territory and, understandably, lobbied for this route. It was eventually completed as the Northern Pacific, but well after the first transcontinental rail line has crossed the mid-section of the US. Overall quality of this print which was done by the firm of Sarony, Major Knapp (NY) is VG+. "Lightning Lake is a very beautiful sheet of water; so called from the fact that during Capt Pope's expedition, while encamped, one of those storms so fearfully violent in this country occurred, during which one of his party was instantly killed by lightning." So writes Stevens in his journall for the day. Steven's stay, in contrast, was uneventful. The lake is, interestingly enough, in Stevens County, Minnesota. (which I ave discovered is, in fact, named for Isaac I. Stevens, this expedition's leader) Terms : Shipping via USPS 1st Class in USA. Overseas shipping as per prices listed on bid details.
